Going into a procedure that requires anesthesia can bring up questions, and understanding who’s caring for you is important. Here at MAAC, your safety and comfort are our top priorities, and that’s why we employ a highly skilled team, including 8 Anesthesiologists and 30 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) to manage your care.
While both Anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are essential and expertly trained in anesthesia, they have different educational paths and scopes of practice.
Anesthesiologist (MD/DO)
- An anesthesiologist is a medical doctor (MD or DO) who has completed medical school followed by a four-year residency specializing in anesthesiology.
- They specialize in perioperative care, meaning they assess your health before surgery, administer and manage your anesthesia during the procedure to control pain and consciousness, and oversee your recovery afterward.
- They are also experts in acute and chronic pain management.
Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)
- A CRNA is a highly trained advanced practice nurse who specializes in anesthesia.
- They are responsible for assessing patients, administering anesthesia, monitoring vital signs, and managing the anesthesia throughout surgical procedures or medical interventions.
- At MAAC, our CRNAs work in a collaborative care team model, often partnering directly with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other operating room staff to provide seamless and comprehensive care.
